Your Dreams and Passions: Why does Jamal choose a different path than the other
boys in the movie?
The reason, why Jamal choose
different path than the other boys, is because he did not want his mother to disappoint
his life. Moreover, his brother ‘T’ also worried about his future and gave him
advice not to be like him. That is why Jamal accepted the suggestion to come to
Mailor Callow private high school. However, Jamal accepted the offer not only because
of those two reasons, but also he wanted to write letters too. An evidence I
can tell why Jamal wants to write letter is he had a habit that he wrote words every
time when something pops-up on his head; and, he was keep visiting Forester’s
apartment to let him read his words and to get advice for him. Forester was probably
the biggest reason why Jamal choose different way than his friends. He was an assistant who helped Jamal how to
write good words. Therefore, Jamal could fell into writing letters because he
can get advice right away from Forester, and Forester was teaching him little
by little every time since he ask question to him. Furthermore, with this
relation between Jamal and Forester continues, their friendship developed
bigger and bigger to affect both each other to help their insufficiencies.
o Second:
Choose one scene from the story that you like. Describe the scene
and tell us what you liked about it.
The scene which makes me to
remember well and easily is when Jamal first started to type with a letter with
old vintage typing machine. He was keep
thinking in contrast with Forester; of course, forester was a pro-writer but it
was not matter. I also realize after what forester said “You write first draft
with your heart, and you rewrite with your head.” I probably will do same act
as Jamal did. However, Jamal couldn’t write any words, so Forester gave him a
letter which he wrote before, so that Jamal can start a letter his paper
through Forester’s paper as a guide line. Finally, Jamal had done with his
writing and that scene makes me feel something like achievement indirectly.

Third
– Choose a good quote
I like the quote “You write first draft with your heart, and you rewrite with
your head.” Which Forester said when he begins to teach how to write good
letter to Jamal.
"Losing family obligates us to find our family. Not always the family that is our blood, but the family that can become our blood. And should we have the wisdom that would open our door to this new family, we will find that the wishes we once had for the father, who once guided us..." This
quote is also another one that I think it is the best word in this movie, Forester's last saying. This
quote was spoken when Forester speech in Jamal’s final class.

You chose some excellent quotes from the movie to demonstrate that Jamal has a passion to write! Clearly, despite all of the barriers Jamal faced, he wouldn't give up on his writing. He didn't want to disappoint his family and that is possibly why he chose to go to the private school. It was a hard place for Jamal at times and clearly Jamal didn't feel like he fit in much. However, I admire how he has the courage and confidence to stick up for his beliefs. That is not easy. We know this is a movie, but may be there are people like Jamal who can break down barriers? Just a thought.

I like the 2 quotes you chose. These are my favorites as well. Jamal's history is a great example to follow. As a foreigner willing to get a degree in the US and living far away from my family, every day I have to break down new barriers in order to one day achieve my dream. Jamal doesn't look for the difficult moments that life puts on his path instead, he fight against it. Even though people judges him, he keeps his head up and keep going because he know that he is good and have a brilliant talent in writing. He even asks for the help of a completed stranger who later become great friends with.
